Friendly Man in Nakano
2008-05-17
Yesterday I was wondering around in Nakano taking photos and wondering where to eat. As I walked past a man, he smiled and gestured like he was taking a photo with a huge smile. He's probably drunk, I thought, and smiled back. Later I ran into him again in another place. He smiled again, and this time I said, "Hisashiburi" ("It's been awhile"). He reacted with surprise. "Do I know you?" he asked as if nothing could be better. Well, actually we passed each other earlier, I said.
Cutting to the chase, I took the opportunity of our conversation to ask his advice on where to eat. I was alone and looking for ramen -- and easy meal to eat alone. He was eager to help but at a loss to give me directions. He brightened, though, and said he'd take me. We walked up the road to a ramen shop I'd seen before. Then he took me inside and insisted on treating me to whatever I wanted.
As we walked toward the place, I'd noticed that his sandals were taped together and he was carrying some things in a plastic bag. He was either homeless or ecentric, and perhaps both judging by the looks we were getting. Could I let a homeless guy buy me ramen? If he was homeless (I don't know), then I guess that's just what I did. We had a fine time, too. Homeless or not, he was lonely and in need of a friend. And I guess I needed someone, too.
The ramen, by the way, was wonderful. Miso ramen, a bit spicy, with a hint of shrimp (the owner told me that part) and chewy noodles that help you savor the flavor for a long time.
Anyway, I'm still thinking of that guy. I'd like to run into him again sometime. If I do, then I'm buying -- and yes, that's him in the photo.
