Saw the Bolshoi Circus in Tokyo today

I still remember when my parents took us to see the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus. What an amazing show! I still love a good circus. My wife and I went to see Cirque Du Solei about ten years ago when it was playing by the Santa Monica Pier. I loved the artistry, although the thrill factor was turned down a notch.

I think the kids had a great time today. They loved the clown, the bicycle riding bears, the horseback riding tricks, and the trapese artists. I enjoyed all the high flying acts, as usual, and it was my first time to see a bear on a bicycle. But I wasn’t impressed by the trained cats. I’m sure it’s hard to train cats, probably a lot harder than training bears. Today most of the cats did their tricks, but a few couldn’t be bothered. They should have left the cats at home on the couch.

My overall review of the Bolshoi Circus is mixed. It lacked truly amazing performances, both in terms of thrills and artistry, and it just didn’t connect personally.

Now we’re leaving for a couple of days to attend the kids’ biggest kayaking event of the year. Then we’re looking forward to a break from planned activities in August, but not a break from the kids — they’re home from school all month.
