Kabukicho is the seamy underbelly of Tokyo. It’s the red light district, barely tamed, where you can eat ramen, drink, and indulge in all sorts of fantasies. If you’re not careful, you may find yourself in trouble. Many of the places are run by organized crime, and there are stories of people being surprised by outrageous bills with no choice but to pay.

It’s a popular spot for young people who want to flirt with the “wild side” (appearing to be a rebel is an art in itself here).

This adult entertainment facility in Kabukicho features girls dressed as nurses on the 2nd floor among many other things. I talked for awhile with an African man from Kenya. His job is to lure visitors inside one of the bars. He is absolutely disgusted by the Japanese of Kabukicho, and with Japanese people in general. I told him he might have a better impression if he spent more time in better parts of the city.

The Kabukicho of Tokyo doesn’t appear as seamy as their counterparts in many American cities. Is this due to cultural acceptance?
