Overweight pets in Japan, fat cats and society in bad shape

fatcatWe’re watching a television program right now about Japanese fat cats. I don’t mean people but overweight cats.

The first overweight cat was a laugh. Then they showed it trying to crawl, but it couldn’t. Who would keep feeding an animal that can’t even crawl to the food dish? After showing a succession of overweight cats and dogs, the announcer said that veterinarians are seeing a remarkable increase in pets being treated for cancer. Apparently, as pets lead increasingly overindulgent, sedentary lifestyles (being pushed around in strollers…) they are also become “more human” in their susceptibility to this disease.

But that’s not all…

Next they showed footage of dogs and cats at a pet fat farm, including a dog exercising in a shallow swimming pool with the aid of a therapist. Then they went to a pet preschool. I don’t mean obedience school, but a fantasy preschool with lessons and snacks. They finished with a wedding, complete with fine clothing, an officiated ceremony, and real wedding cake.

I think it’s a reflection of a society achieving success without any real goal and succumbing to narcissist self-parody. There’s got to be something better to aspire to in life than this.

  1. Interesting! It does give one pause.

  2. Here’s a post you should DEFINITELY check out. I think the “certainty” part represents me pretty well, and the “opennes” part, you. http://christisdeeperstill.blogspot.com/2009/05/certainty-and-openness.html

That is a very big cat. The cat should get some exercise.

I looked at the link. I basically agree, although (as one commenter said) who wouldn’t. I think people can spin out from his “center” into disagreement again (as you can see in the comments, too).
