I went to see a sekotsuin today. A sekotsuin is basically a Japanese physical therapist and much more. They are the first place people turn for all kinds of work/accident/age/stress related injuries and pains.
The first time I went to a sekotsuin was when I threw my back out last year. He gave me a message and heat treatment, and I got better after about a week. No biggie.
Today I went because I have shijukatta. That means “40 shoulder” (40 year old shoulder). They also have “50 shoulder” depending on your age; the symptoms are about the same. I can’t raise my arm above my shoulder. The inner muscles got too weak, plus I used the computer too much without proper arm support. My dad (a doctor) says it’s tendonitis. I’ve had the problem for about a year now, but I always hoped it would naturally go away. Recently, I’ve been feeling consistent pain, and I’m worried. Whatever you call it, either I need to get better or face having this for the rest of my (hopefully long) life.
Today’s treatment started with acupuncture (didn’t hurt) along with some type of electric shock therapy (to my shoulder, not to my head). Then the nurse gave me shiatsu massage for about 30 minutes (painful but so nice). Finally, the sekotsuin returned and stretched my shoulder in ways I’ve only dreamed of. I’ve tried stretching it, but it’s awkward and I usually just hurt myself worse.
So I’m taking a first step on the road to recovery. One thing I’m resolving is to spend less time on the computer and more time exercising and moving around. Also, my desk (a board on top of shelves) is too high, so I’m going to try and make a keyboard shelf underneath (any tips?). Take care of yourselves!
